Wednesdays With Shantha : Chapter 18 (Part 1) – Angaharas
In this video podcast, Shantha & I discuss about the concept of Angaharas, delving into their significance in Bharatanatyam. Shantha describes Angaharas as foundational sequences composed of karanas and asks me to explain further about the graceful combinations of hand and foot movements—that are seamlessly connected using rechekas to create fluidity. These rhythmic patterns serve as a framework for intricate compositions, allowing dancers to narrate stories, express emotions, and convey symbolic meanings.
Shantha and I further discuss the origins of Angaharas are rooted in Lord Shiva’s divine dance, passed down by Tandu to Sage Bharata.
Shantha highlights Bharata Muni’s classification of 32 unique Angaharas, each designed to align with specific talas and evoke distinct emotions. She discusses with Ram as we elaborate on the technical precision required to execute Angaharas, emphasizing the role of talas and texts like Sangita Ratnakara in structuring these sequences.
They further emphasize their spiritual dimension, portraying them as a meditative offering that connects performers to the divine.
Shantha & I conclude by reflecting on how mastering Angaharas equips dancers with the creative vocabulary to craft intricate narratives and explore innovative choreography, bridging tradition and artistry in Bharatanatyam.
We continue our discussion in the next podcast for additional areas that need more elaboration.
