Chapter 18 – Angaharas
Narrated by Shantha
In this Episode 2, Shantha goes on discuss further about Angaharas in Bharatanatyam that are dynamic sequences derived from the Natya Shastra, combining mudras, karanas, and gatis to express grace, rhythm, and emotions.
There are 32 Angaharas, each uniquely structured to convey moods (bhavas) and emotions (rasas), integrating tradition and innovation. Rechakas, involving movements of the head, hands, chest, sides, and feet, add fluidity, emotional depth, and aesthetic appeal to Angaharas.
Together, Angaharas and Rechakas enhance both nrittam (pure dance) and abhinaya (expressive storytelling), showcasing a dancer’s mastery. They also carry profound spiritual significance, symbolizing the unity of body, mind, and soul.
Angaharas remain a cornerstone of Bharatanatyam, preserving its cultural and artistic legacy.
