Chapter 21 : Ahaaryam : Costume, Design and Makeup

Shantha and I discussed the intricate details of Costume, Design, and Makeup in Bharatanatyam, emphasizing their significance in enhancing the visual storytelling of the dance.

The costume is traditionally made of silk with vibrant colors, zari borders, and pleats that open beautifully with movement, symbolizing grace and fluidity. The jewelry, including temple ornaments, headpieces, and waist belts, adds grandeur and reflects divine aesthetics.

Makeup is essential to highlight expressions, with bold eyeliner, red lips, and intricate forehead designs ensuring visibility under stage lighting. Shantha explained how Alta (red dye) on fingers and feet accentuates movements, making hand gestures more prominent. The design of the costume is tailored for comfort and flexibility, allowing free movement during intricate footwork and poses. Hair adornments, such as flowers and jewels, complete the traditional look, symbolizing beauty and devotion.

The choice of color and embroidery patterns reflects the dancer’s role and the story being told. We also discussed the importance of costume maintenance, ensuring durability and elegance for multiple performances.

Lastly, Shantha pointed out how stage lighting interacts with costume colors and makeup, making the dancer’s expressions more vivid and immersive.
